Ricky Karcher had the wildest debut in MLB history. It was wild in two ways: his complete absence of command, as well as the high stakes situation he was thrust into for the Cincinnati Reds, facing off against the Kansas City Royals on June 12, 2023.
That Reds Royals June 12 2023 matchup was already memorable before Karcher showed up. Salvador Perez hit a late homer to force extras, but TJ Friedl scored in the top of the 10th to put Karcher in a save situation. A real one, mind you, not any of that Wes Littleton Save silliness.
Karcher faced Bobby Witt Jr., Michael Massey, Edward Olivares, and Maikel Garcia in that order. You'll have to watch this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, to see if Ricky Karcher can record a Ricky Karcher save in the Ricky Karcher game.

    He only got 80,000 as a signing bonus from the DR, but made over half a million in his one big league year. And I don’t get the sense he was wealthy when he was in the DR. I also don’t get the sense Luciano had much upside potential.

    If Karcher has that good of a slider maybe he should work on a completely different pitch than the base fastball, and just make his slider cover the fastball role? Honestly he sounds exactly like Sandy Koufax was, where he had amazing stuff but was uncontrollable. Koufax then took the advice to let off the gas some and not throw as hard as he possibly could and it changed his career trajectory entirely. Please for the love of God let Karcher turn out to be a savant slow pitcher with masterful control by changing his style like Mark Eichorn or a knuckleballer. That would be amazingly gratifying.

  • @gmbenz2482
    @gmbenz2482 2 дні тому

    What made the catch so great was the distance Mays had to run to catch the ball. Mays tended to play shallow in centerfield. It was 483 feet to dead center. The ball was hit to right-center. Mays was going full tilt just to catch up to it, and then had to reach up over his left shoulder (giving him not the best view of the ball) to haul it in.

  • @kengrow
    @kengrow 2 дні тому

    I saw Mays play at the LA Coliseum against the Dodgers in 1959. I was behind Mays in the centerfield seats about three rows back. A ball was hit to dead center and Mays casually backed up a few steps and leaped up several inches off the ground to snag the ball in the web of his glove. He then threw the ball submarine-style back to the infield and continued to chew his gum with no other expression on his face, as if he was merely playing catch at the local schoolyard. As a 12-year-old, I was wowed by the whole thing. Over the decades, I have attended many, many MLB games, but that catch has remained imprinted on my mind like no other.

    The first one was an infield fly, though…the infield fly rule isn’t about whether it physically lands in the infield, it’s about whether an infielder can field it with reasonable effort. He could, here, he was literally camped under it. The rule is actually to protect the team that’s batting. Without it, the runners at first and second would have to tag, and the infielder could drop it on purpose and get an easy double play at third and second. It was the correct call

How it took them 120 years to adopt the universal DH is one of the great mysteries of mankind. I mean the egyptians built spaceship pyramids in 5000bc, surely making baseball better was easier than that.

    I just find it mindboggling that in 1961, Roger Maris, a Yankees right fielder, broke a Yankees right fielder, Babe Ruth’s record, by hitting 61 home runs. 61 years later, Aaron Judge, a Yankees right fielder, breaks that record by hitting 62. The Yankees right fielder lore is absurd.

    I literally meant to comment this the day the video came out but never got around to tit. I find myself latching onto and following a lot of these fringe/replacement level (if that) players so this video was awesome. Another one that isn't as special as it wasn't a debut but amazing work from a bullpen arm nonetheless: July 12, 2022, Cardinals vs. Dodgers game 1 of a random 3 game series before going into All-star break. TL;DR a miracle was needed in the 7th inning and a man named Packy Naughton provided. Also I was keeping up with Ricky since this video and I had realized that AZ has a knack for picking up flyers/fringe pitchers with wicked nasty stuff but absolutely (or damn near) ZERO idea where it's going. What really made me notice this was because they had another arm alongside Ricky in their bullpen by the name of Dakota Chalmers. I guess Chalmers was a 3rd round pick by the Athletics back in 2015, eventually made his way to and released by the Dodgers system in 2022 and then eventually picked up by the Dbacks from what I think was a pro-day hosted by Tread Athletics (only reason i know any of this was because of some short of this guy from their channel that popped on my feed). Thing is even since singing Chalmers like Ricky, has some nasty breaking stuff but his inability to locate had his ERA in Triple A above 9; with at least 1 walk/ hit by pitch guaranteed. Not to mention Chalmers also has the velo so again like Ricky, he's very much a wild thing on the bump. Unfortunately it looks like as of recent (literally less than a week ago as of writing this [June 23,2024]), Ricky and Dakota respectively were released by the Dbacks (which is nuts because I literally was going through MiLB games a couple weeks back, stumbled on the Reno Aces and noticed Ricky on the mound proceeded by Dakota so obviously, I watched the rest of the game). Always sucks to see such a great and heartwarming story like that in a rather bittersweet way. Here's to hoping both Ricky and Dakota may eventually find a way to tame their beasts of a pitch mix.

    Yankees resigned Tim to because of this video because they realized Tim Locastro is worth $900,000 a year to have a weird art thief who makes baseball better on their roster and 1 Tim Locastro plate appearance is well worth $19,565 dollars and 21 cents unironically. They signed Jacoby Ellsbury to a 7 year $153 million dollar deal so he could play 4 years for them and then have them try to avoid paying $26 million of that contract for getting unauthorized outside medical treatment.
